I bought this grill a while back. It does the job but burns the food more often than it should. It's hard to control the temperature and doesn't leave grill marks like a cast iron grill would. The next grill will be a cast iron grill. Stainless steel is overrated!
I bought the weber genesis gold in march 2008. I been using it about 3 times a week. It is my first higher end grill and I enjoy using it. Before I got my Weber I had to deal with hot spots and yearly burner replacing. With the Weber the first thing I did was try to find a hot spot but believe me there is none!! It heats evenly and cooks like a dream. I love the control of having 3 burners and the side burner even cooked well with the wind blowing about 15-20 MPH. The side shelves are very easy to use. GREAT GRILL!!
Weber quality is here. The grill performs flawlessly with a minimum of flare ups. Good non-magnetic stainless used also. The flavorizer bars are sturdy and really add flavor to the meats!
Owned a cheap gas grill that died after 2 years of less than stellar performance. I asked a few friends and a few sales people for recommendations and almost all of them said Weber. I am extremely happy to have taken their advice. I learned a lot about grilling from the included booklet and with this knowledge and this Weber, my family is now enjoying grilled food about 4 times a week. Great grill !!!
I've had my Gold C for a couple of months now. It was an upgrade from an old Charbroil I had for about 10 years. I just did not realize how horrible that old grill was. The Weber product is heads and tails above what I was using. Don't let the BTU rating fool you - this grill will sear and char a steak as well as a cast iron skillet. I cooked some Omaha Steaks 6 oz top sirloins today - 8 minutes total cooking time for medium-rare, 10 minutes for medium. And the steaks were blackened but not burnt, just like they came out of my skillet.
The heat controls make it very easy to bring the pit to a desired temperature and keep it there when cooking items like pork tenderloin. The insulated hood keeps the heat in and helps with convection cooking. And heating is even over most all of the grilling area. Cooking a dozen or so hamburgers at a time is no problem.
On the downside:
- My old grill had a wooden lid handle. The Weber is stainless. Looks great, but it gets hot!
- The burners run side to side, not front to back. Makes it hard to keep something warm off to one side while still cooking on high heat elsewhere.
- The wheels are plastic, and that makes moving the unit around on my exposed aggregate patio a pain. Rubber wheels would be so much better.
I had problems with getting the grill lit when it first arrived. After a couple of calls to Weber, they did ship a replacement regulator/hose that took care of the problem. Customer service was great.
Overall, this is a solid 4 star item. There may be slightly better grills at this price, but the Weber customer service can't be beat. I know 10 years from now I'll still be using this grill and enjoying it.
We love our Weber Grill. We love it so much we want to grill almost every night! This grill has everything you could need - at a price that's not bad (expensive, but not as expensive as some). I really recommend this grill to anyone.
This grill really is fantastic. I've had it for 2 months now, with absolutely no buyers remorse at all.
Pros:
1. Excellent heat control with a 3-zone heating system. Turn off the middle zone, and you go from direct heating to convection style grilling. I'm finding the capability to switch from direct to convection-style heating to be useful for cooking things like fish, chicken, and ribs without scorching the outside.
2. Fantastic temperature control from 250 degrees F, all the way up to 600 degrees. The temperature gauge on the front is really useful.
3. The fuel indicator is a nice feature.
4. It's very simple to remove any parts that tend to get messy and put into the dishwasher. Cleanup is a snap. The parts fit in the dishwasher without taking up all the space.
Cons (really just a few minor annoying things):
1. The lower cabinet is not water proof. Anything left in it will get wet in the rain.
2. My lower cabinet doors tend to swing open too easily. I added a magnetic door latch to deal with the problem.
3. The sideburner does not put out that many BTU's. It's more of a warmer than a burner. I ussually have to light the sideburner with a match, as the lighting switch doesn't seem to consistently work for the sideburner.
4. This grill is really heavy. Don't expect to throw it in the back of your pickup and take to the park. It's a 2-man job to move it around.
Overall fantastic grill, with a few minor annoyances. I give it 5 stars, mostly for the excellent temperature control, and the fact that I've gone from a grill meister that scorched the outside of the meat 50% of the time (with my previous grill), to perfect consistent results everytime.
I've owned and used other grills, but the Genesis is my favorite for two reasons:
1) It makes cooking easier. The heat is absolutely consistent, with no hotspots. I feel more at home in front of the grill than using my kitchen oven.
2) It's built like a tank. Easy to clean, and industructible. My old grill was not.
Buy the rotisserie attachment. You won't be sorry.
My wife and I got our "Weber" Genesis Gold C almost a year ago and it's worked for us in the heat and in the cold without any problems at all. I originally selected this model for our Wedding Registry, not expecting to get it, and was thrilled when it arrived on our back doorstep...because the box was too big to get through the front door! *grin*
Some things we really love about it:
1. Construction
We were able to assemble it in under 30 minutes and get it running once I got the tank filled with propane not long after. The solid construction and stainless steel show no signs of rust or discoloration after a full year of weekly use.
2. Grillspace
The huge grillspace is more than accomodating when it comes time to get working with the heat. Three long burners allow for easy use for multiple heats and meat placement, as well as using the front two burners for meat while setting the third for bun grilling or potato cooking/heating or corn cooking or...well, you get the idea. The side burner is also useful if you're boiling sides or keeping your BBQ sauce warm or boiling brots in beer before you transfer them to the grill heat.
3. Workspace
There is a great deal of workspace and if you suddenly decide you need more so you don't contaminate your cooked meat with uncooked meat, there are two "fold-out" shelves which pull out in seconds and are more than sturdy for your 10lb leg of lamb to rest on.
4. Useful Display Features
The thermometer is very easy to read and "up front" on the cover so you know if you have the burners up high. The gravity-spring gas gauge is harder to see, but is very easy to read once you squat down to check on the fuel level in your tank.
5. Cleaning
Stainless steel design and parts make cleaning a snap. The usual grill-brush cleaning works fine but you can also remove the grill grates and "flavor bars" (dripping catchers) and scrub them in the sink and drop them right back in with no problems at all.
6. Ignition
In the year we've had the unit, it has always lit on the first press of the ignition lighter. The back two burners light from the first burner when it's lit, but nothing could be easier and it's great not to have to use long-stemmed matches or lighters anymore.
Bottom Line:
1. If you can afford it, buy it and you'll have a grill for life!
2. If you really like your friend, buy it for them and you'll have a friend for life who will invite you over for cookouts!
3. If you can't afford it, put it on your Wish List or Wedding Registry and maybe you'll have it delivered to your rear doorstep!
I've had this 'Weber' (Genesis Gold C) for almost 3 months now and it works for me very fine for a number of reasons:
1. Quality. For example the cookbox is casted aluminium to sustain the strong heat. This is one of the reasons why I went for WEBER than for an all-stainless grills.
2. Thermometer on the hood is an absolute useful feature.
3. plenty of working surfaces. The folding tables on the sides come very handy when you have a lot of barbecueing to do.
4. Cooking area is plentiful. One batch can serve 6 people easily.
5. Cleaning is as easy as it could be.
6. The BTU is more than enough. I've had my meat overdone/burnt more often than I would like.
7. Fuel gauge to let you know when to refill your tank.
8. The mechanical ignition works perfectly everytime. Don't let any salesman talking you into another brand with an electronic ignition. Electronic ignition has absolutely no advantage over the mechnical one and yet you need a battery to power it. To me, electronic ignition is rather a disadvantage due to the need to change the battery from time to time.
I have to admit that it took me more than an hour to assemble the unit. Also I haven't had a chance to try out the side burner yet. Maybe I don't need it, but again it's sure there if I have the need for it.
Conclusion: If you're looking for a grill this summer then get a weber because it is built for the JOB. Color and side burner or no side burner or stainless steel or not , believe me, are not critical factors. Quality, reliability and design should be at the top of your priority list.
