What a nice piece of equipment. I wanted to start cooking more at home instead of eating out. My last grill was a Chargrill Commercial series with a stainless finish. I had considered a Weber then, but didn't want to spend the extra money. It's 7-8 years old with a couple of issues, so I wanted to add a nice new grill to my cooking arsonal. After reading all the reviews I could find I wanted to see what I had missed on my last grill purchase. I chose this grill and a good choice it was! I just picked the grill up last night, and I put it together today.
UNPACKING:
It's a big box and heavy! Count on needing a couple guys to move it around. Packaging is decent, but not very protective of a few parts. Luckily, the major area that would suffer any marks is the inside of the grill itself. I special ordered from a local hardware shop to avoid shipping and hope to get one in as near perfect condition as possible. The box was damaged, and Weber failed to put a pin (or it fell out) in both sides on the top, so the top was able to move around a bit in shipping. This created a 4" or so thin mark inside my grill and rubbed some paint away from where that pin should have been. It's not the worst thing that could have happened, but I was looking for better protection of such expensive parts.
Assembly:
I read scores of feedback giving estimates from as little as 1 hour for an average Joe up to 4 1/2 hours for 3-4 handymen trying to get it together. I would consider my skills average or slightly above. It took me just shy of 2 hours from the time I opened the box. I've read all the complaints of the included instructions. I agree that more written comments would have helped a great deal, but I'm a man and wouldn't have read them anyway:)
Let me give some advice, though. Look at one assembled in a hardware store. Then, unpack every item, and spread them all out. You should be able to group things that will be put together fairly easily. The instructions/pictures are very informative as to what you need on each step. The bolts and washers are either stainless or black, and hte pictures show this making it easy to tell which bolt or washer you need. Take a couple minutes to understand the orientation of parts so you don't have to do things twice. Others have had this happen, and I'm sure it was due to haste. Use your own 7/16" or 12mm socket to make things faster. I could put a second one of these together in less than an hour, so it's not that difficult if you take the time to understand what's going where.
APPEARANCE:
It's VERY attractive assembled. I know some complain it's not all stainless, but the darker painted accents (box and side caps) are very nice looking. I'm thinking they are made of aluminum, but I'm not sure. The bottom support frame is made of painted steel, and is definately less than desirable. I would have loved to see this stainless, but that would have driven the cost up I'm sure. Over all, I think it's very well constructed.
USE:
OH MY!!! I'm impressed for my first time cooking on it. My wife likes her steak well done but not dry, and I like my steak medium with a good sear. I preheated to 500 like is recommended. I dropped her steak on it and after five minutes or so when I made the first turn, I started mine. I was able to get a good criss-cross grill mark on both sides of both steaks. When I flipped my steak over, I added a couple 5 oz. lobster tails to the grill with the meat side down. Two minutes later, I turned the tails over onto the shell side, added a bit of butter and gave everything another 5 minutes or so. BAMM, everything was awesome! Nothing burnt, everything done to near perfection, and even with fatty ribeyes and butter and olive oil dripping from the lobster flameups were limited to only a whisp as they immediately burned themselves out. Almost the entire surface of the grill gets nice and evenly hot without creating flareup issues.
Form met function in most every way. Even the Weber 3 piece tool set works perfectly hanging on the side "hooks". I had no problems getting burned or touching hot spots on the grill itself. I hope I don't have a greasefire due to the large drip pan like one reviewer, but I REALLY like how easy it is to remove and also how easy it is to change out the collection tin. I can't wait to use the Rotisserie tomorrow!
COMPARISON:
I only have my older Charbroil and the cheap POS's I have used in the past. I wouldn't touch another cheap gas grill again. The Commercial series Charbroil was a pretty good grill, but the materials used were cheaper, assembly was more time consuming/difficult, and made noises when the gas was turned up to max on all three burners. The Weber S-320 is obviously much nicer looking, better materials, better fitting parts, a more thought-out design, and more accurate control of heat. It has nearly silent operation except for the sizzle of the meat of course. And, the flavor bars get VERY hot to create smoke and immediately burn off any grease that touches them instead of allowing for a major flare up like some other grills would.
POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS:
I gave it four stars. It wasn't so much as the grilled is flawed, but that there is room for improvement. I agree the controls for the burners might be better placed in front of the grill. I am used to putting a plate down on my right to transfer the grilled meat to and from. It wasn't a big deal putting it on the left side of the grill. Of course, you can't use the side burner and use the left tray to place a plate. AND, I do actually like them where they are instead of on the front of the grill. I would however, sacrifice that slight advantage (as I see it), to gain the use of the right shelf for a plate. It's not enough of an issue to have worried me though.
As I mentioned earlier, I would have liked to have seen the frame made out of stainless, and organized storage inside the frame (perhaps drawers). Most things I would put under the grill might scratch the bottom tray, and could cause premature rusting.
CONCLUSION:
It is truely the best grill I've ever used or seen being used, but there still is room for improvement. However, this shouldn't keep anyone from buying the grill. If you are in the market, and you have the cash to drop on a grill, this grill should be on your short list. If you are like me, and just want to stop researching and start cooking, you won't be dissapointed.
I'm extremely pleased with my new Weber grill. The first steaks that I cooked following Weber's cookbook instructions were perfect. I believe the repeatability of excellent results set Weber in general, and this model in particular, at the head of the class.
I am less enthusiastic about the cover. I, as well as many other reviewers, wonder why there need to be large mesh panels which allow rain to get to the burner cover and control panel. It seems to defeat the purpose of using it. Also a zipper on the front or side would make it easier to remove and replace.
The assembly went well, but took longer than expected, it took 6+ hours. About which I have a few comments and suggestions-
1) Use your own ratchet, 1/4" straight drive (looks like a screw driver but it has a 1/4" square drive instead of a blade), 11 mm socket and a LARGE Phillips head screw drive. An electric screw driver helps, but isn't required. You could use the stamped steel wrench they've included, but you won't like it.
2) Wear gloves the raw edged steel panels, are sometimes very sharp.
3) There are several bolts of the same size, some are stainless steel, and others are black zinc oxide. There are several washers of the same size some are plastic others are aluminum. Make sure you are using the right ones or you'll need to take it apart and do it again correctly (I can't imagine why they didn't use all stainless bolts and aluminum washers to avoid confusion).
4) The fit is fantastic, absolutely perfect and all the pieces were there
5) Almost no plastic is used, just some washers, knobs and casters. Even some pieces I thought were plastic are made from powder coated cast metal.
6) The casters are step #1, but packed under the drip pan, step #16, near the end so you'll need to unpack everything before you start to assemble.
7) The instructions are short on words, and the drawings require some close attention.
8) The packaging could be better. Something heavy (a cooking grate, I think) rubbed against the inside of the hood during transit and scratched it, but as it's on the inside, I'll live with it.
9) Customer service is excellent and the phone is manned until 11:00 PM Central time!
10) It looks great!
Before I purchased this grill I went and looked for reviews which I always do before making any purchases. I found that the reviews listed here in AMAZON is very reliable and unbiased. So here I am writing my own review for this Weber gas grill. I wanted to say that this grill is well worth your money. I was first hesitant to purchase this grill due to its steep price tag. But after looking at the reviews and comparing the pros ad cons I decided to go for it. I placed the order through AMAZON website and after 3-4 days I received a call from a local shipping company to a schedule a delivery. I was not home the day it was delivered but I'd say it was delivered properly. What I like about this grill is the even heat distribution throughout the cooking grates. The food is cook evenly without burning one side of the meat. However I'd say that the stainless steel burner cover may need a thicker steel due to high heat coming out from the burner itself. Weber probably need to work on this for the next model. Overall I am happy with my purchase and I would recommend this grill.
***By the way I normally don't write up reviews but I feel that this grill is worth taking time to recommend to someone else.***
At first I loved this grill. Almost as substantial as the Summit but hundreds of dollars less made this grill perfect for my budget.
What I haven't liked about the grill is that the grease pan has a long slope across the entire width of the grill. The grease is supposed to travel down this slope to drain into a collection pan. But if you are cooking food above the propane tank (where the pan is really close to the flames so it can clear the tank), the grease has so far to travel that it usually dries up in the middle and never makes it to the collection pan. Clean up is a pain which can lead to...
...a major grease fire like the one I had last week. My grill got so hot the thermostat couldn't measure the temp anymore -- well over 1000 degrees. I had flames shooting out the sides and the vents in back, even after the propane was turned off. I don't know how hot those propane tanks can get, but I think I'm lucky mine didn't explode. I had to grab a fire extinguisher to put the flames out. My flavorizer bars and grease pan were ruined. I've never had a fire get out of hand like that in 20 years of grilling.
I'd really recommend getting a different grill with a better pan for collecting the grease.
Update: I thought Weber had a reputation for excellent customer service. I decided to contect them by the e-mail on their Web site, but have not even gotten an acknowledgment.
After having an original, black Webber Genesis for 19 years, albeit with a few new grills and flavorizor bars from HomeDepot along the way, it was looking pretty shabby. Finally, time to upgrade, although this meant that my family would no longer be too embarassed by the old Webber to invite anyone over, still it was the right choice and once again friends and family grace our deck and smile at the new shiny grill while munching food grilled to absolute perfection.
Since I learned how to grill steaks to perfection using the Webber HHH then MOM technique, I did not want to start over with another grill brand.
The solid s/s grills themselves are very nice, strong, easy to scrape and brush clean w/o ceramic to deal with. The overall look of s/s is very upscale w/o getting into the thousands of $ with Viking, Wolf, etc. Who needs an infared element? Well, not me anyhow.
I could not be happier about how the grill works, looks, has some storage w/doors under the grill, and cleans-up after use.
Here are some things to know in advance (as you still buy this grill anyway.)
1) The side burner model vs. the no side burner model. I would probably buy the model w/o it if I had to replace the unit today. It works great, but I don't use it much. I suppose that if the grill was far from the kitchen (where it is usually easier to steam corn - or whatever - it would be valuable enough to justify the +$50. But what I really don't like is that the s/s flip-up cover for the side burner, though sturdy enough so far, gives me pause about putting anything more than a couple of pounds on it out of concern that it will bend or otherwise distort. Remember my life expectancy for a Webber is officially 19 years.
2) This time, I bought the Webber cover. It has a section of mesh directly above each of the side extensions (i.e., one over the right side w/the three controls and one over the left side w/the side burner.) Why I would prefer to have rain water get into my grill when I paid +$50 for a rain cover is a mystery to me. I understand that some ventalation is desirable, but still. I didn't see any flaps or covers for the mesh; I may take matters into my own hands.
3) The catch pan underneath the grill, where the cooking drippings fall through the grill, keeps filling-up with rain water - with the aforementioned cover on or off. This is the most annoying thing about the grill because it is impossible to remove the catch pan w/o spilling some of the water, not to mention the ugly stuff that the pan is intended to catch, when removing it to empty. UUUUUGGGHHHH!
Back on the positive side, the ugly blue-tan-purple scorching mark at and above the handle area on the lower front of the splendid s/s lid was pretty easily removed with Cape Cod silver cleaner (wads of cotton impregnated with cleaner. These very unsightly scorched areas were caused when my son wanted to leave the grill on for a few minutes to burn off residue after he'd finished grilling. He forgot all about it and it burned through the night until the gas was depleated. In his defense, we were well into that evening's wine tasting by that time. So, some propane was wasted, but the Webber was not. Oh, and also, the house was not consumed in a fire ball, which I consider a plus. No scorching appears during normal use.
I'd buy it again - probably in about 19 years.
6 Month Update:
The grill is still great and I would still buy it again. The cover is still poorly designed, still lets rain water in and the drip pan still fills it to the brim with water making an ugly mess that fills the drip pan such that when I try to remove it, some disgusting (Petry Dish quality dusgusting) stuff still spills.
I called Webber this (Sunday) morning ang quickly got Tammy on the phone (impressively fast customer service.) I explained my problem and Tammy told me that the idea of the open mesh areas of the cover is for ventalation, and that some water will get on the 3 controls and the side burner cover, and it can be easily wiped-up. This is true, it can.
But as to the problem of water getting into the drip pan, she told me that the drip is supposed to be emptied after each use. This is reduculous. There I am, grilling steaks to perfection and wanting them to get on the table as quickly as possible, I am supposed to empty the drip pan? I think not.
Maybe I should line the nice aluminum Webber Drip Pan Liners with aluminum foil (I realy can't bring muself to throw out one of Webber's kind-of expensive pan liners each grilling) to make it easier to clean. But the rain water getting into the drip pan after each rain, regardless of whether the grill cover is on or off remains an annoyance. I never had this priblem with my old Webber.
I still really recommend this gril - especially if you place it on a covered deck. Since this review is of the S-320 Genesis grill, it gets 5 stars. Were this a review of the S-320 cover, it would be 1 star.
Very nice looking, solid grill. Very easy to assamble, works perfect so far. Includes system to measure gas level remainin in the thank, I haven't get to the point to see how precise is but at least you are not blind completely.
I knew when I was putting it together that it would be golden. Most of the hardware (bolts / nuts) were actually made of stainless steel! How nice to have decent bolts that don't strip out when assembling.
A socket set is helpful for assembly, as is the socket / screwdriver tool that's standard in most of them.
It literally is almost too beautiful to use. It heats quickly and more importantly, cools off quickly so you can put the cover back on.
No cold spots on the grill, the stainless is 304 alloy (magnetic). High, high quality, made in the USA greatness.
I researched long and hard for a grill. I checked Consumer magazines, read reviews and testimonials, and visited local retailers as well as the big box stores. But I decided to go for it and I couldn't be happier. Delivery was a breeze. While I was putting it together, (which only took a couple of hours) I was impressed with the way it was engineered and the quality of the components. Any doubt I may have had was completely eliminated after cooking on it. Everything turned out perfect. I am also very impressed with the availability of parts and accessories. I ordered the handle light and the smoker box and both work very well. Only thing I am not too happy about is that the knobs are located on the side tray. Please, Weber, put them on the front so we can use the side tray. Either that, or give us some folding trays like some of the older models. Other than that, it is a great product.
OMG I had no idea grills had so many parts. Assembly took a while, but the guide was well-illustrated and easy to follow. The grill is fantastic, and heats up rapidly. Be aware that the most prominent markings on the thermometer are centigrade, not farenheit. I seared my first meat more rapidly than planned. I would like to see the grill come with enclosed or braided steel gas line since a squirrel finished off himself and my last grill by chewing through the line. replacement should be easy, though.
An excellent performing grill with very even cooking. The only thing I miss is the fold-down side tables on their previous models. They could've worked them in the design and I would have gladly pay extra for them. Otherwise, a fine choice with plenty of cooking area and well-controlled heat.
