It's funny how the guys coming to the BBQ all comment and check out this grill.
Just received one for a housewarming gift. Have used it twice and am sure it's a "sleeping giant": WHAT A GREAT BBQ!!! A little messier than a gas grill and takes maybe 20 mins for coals to be white hot - start to finish - but what gas grill will get the temperature up to 700 deg!?? Talk about the ULTIMATE in broiling! Super easy to light - push-button ignites w/ propane in 3-5 mins, then wait 15-20 mins and go. Everyone's going to want one of these!!
Got this on ebay for 150.00, it was barely used. Give me a high five!
While the 04' model of the performer is slightly pricier than the latest 05' model, there is no comparision between the two models in terms of design, function, and useability. If you want the BEST charcoal grill made, your choice should be an 04' Performer!!!!
I have owned only 2 grills in my lifetime. Both were little, cheap and unsuited to my novice grilling status.
When I committed to buy a real barbeque grill I read scores of reviews and descriptions to find the right one. After reading Amazon's customer reviews of the Performer (the 827020 22.5 inch Performer Charcoal Grill with Propane Gas Ingnition, purchased in Summer of 2003) I was so impressed I bought it.
What a grill! I don't know how Weber does it (convection, perhaps?)--even my overdone meats come out moist and flavorful. Veggies come out great--I grilled zucchini squash last summer, and YUMM!
This grill gives me the best of both worlds: gas and charcoal. The gas feature allows me to light up quickly, rain or shine. The small propane tank is not the primary energy source, so seldom needs refilling. Charcoal gives foods real barbeque flavor, and my gardens love Weber's convenient one step ash disposal system.
I cannot praise this grill enough. I only wish the newer version inspired more positive reviews, and hope friends I recommended the Performer to can still find this model.
I love this grill. I pile on my charcoal, turn on the gas and click the igniter, just once! In 2 minutes my pile o' hardwood charcoal is ablaze! Shut off the gas and in 15-20 minutes I have the most perfect charcoal for grilling the most perfect steaks and veggies. I use to mess with chimneys which are cheaper and effective but they were always going out on me. The ash cleanup is amazingly easy with this grill plus it enables me to reuse pieces of coal that didn't burn all the way because when I am done grilling I just close the vents which is highly effective in putting them out. I have 1 problem with it and it's with the lid holder which is on the left side of the grill. It's great for shielding the fire from wind while it's getting going but when it comes time to turn the food it's right in the way for us lefties. I just set it on the ground, no big deal. I could just turn the whole thing around and bam it's a barbie for lefties but it seems to still be in the way if grilling large amounts of food(and it's hot if you have been grilling with it on.) I do not think you will be disappointed if you buy this grill. I looked into serveral different brands and am just thrilled with buying this one. I own a gas grill but never use it as you can't beat the taste of cooking with charcoal. I was weary of the price but decided to go for it. I am so glad I did.
I had gotten the Performer in hopes of having the best of both worlds - the taste of charcoal and the convenience of gas. I have had it for two years. It is probably the best charcoal grill around, but a gas grill is faster to get ready to cook and a lot cleaner.
This is my first Weber charcoal grill and the quality and ease of cooking is great. Food is more moist due to quicker cooking and I have never had a problem with flare ups. Also, the food has much more of that charcoal grill taste.
The Performer makes a charcoal grill more convenient. Gas starts the charcoal more quickly and doesn't leave that fluid starter taste. The ash collector is very easy to use. Just wiggle it three or four times and the ash falls into a collection pan.
I have cooked in three modes. I leave the charcoal in the charcoal bins when I am grilling a small amount of food. In essence, I can only use about 1/3 of the grill area. The advantage of leaving the charcoal in the bins is that I can reuse the unburned charcoal much more easily. I can cook four hamburger patties or about 2 lbs of chicken in this mode. When I have more food to cook, I distribute the charcoals over the bottom grate. After cooking, I have to scoop up the unburned charcoal to put back into the charcoal bins for relighting on the next use. The indirect mode is very easy. You place the charcoal bins on the outer portion of the bottom grate and you have room to put a drip pan between them. The top grill has two wings that fold up to allow replenishment of the charcoal for long cooking.
I got the Weber rotisserie attachment. It allowed me to cook hams, turkey and fish. I cooked hams and turkey in the indirect mode. It made the cooking very even. I use the rotisserie with fish because I use the basket to prevent sticking to the grill. I can't use conventional fish baskets with the Weber because the handle has to hang out. The additional ring for the rotisserie allowed more cooling air and I couldn't get the temperature above 350 degrees.
The gas starter tank is 5 lbs. Most places have a set charge or minimum charge that makes it the equivalent of a 25 lb tank fill. The only place that I have found that doesn't have a minimum is U-Haul. I have been cooking on the grill 1-3 times a week and can get almost a year out of one fill.
I have had some problems with the starter. I find that you have to have a tight connection on the starter button or it won't have a good electrical connection. Also, the sparker gets sooted up. You have to remove the sparker by unloosing two screws and clean the sparker element with a wire brush.
A gas grill is more convenient, but it doesn't have the same great taste. My old gas grill was ready to cook in 10 minutes. It takes 20-30 minutes to get the Weber ready. I have to empty the ash pan about every 8 times I cook. I tried cleaning the interior of the tar deposits, but I wasn't able to clean it up very well. I occasionally get some deposits on the bottom that jam the charcoal sweeper and have to chip them away.
The charcoal bin takes about 25 lbs of charcoal, but I find it pretty hard to push on a grass lawn with a full bin. I wish they had put the handles on the other side away from the charcoal bin. I only keep 10 lbs in the bin. I store some welder gloves and a 12 inch grill tool. I use the gloves to handle the charcoal and the tool to push around the hot charcoal bins. I tried grabbing the bins with the welder gloves, but they started charring.
In conclusion, I am really happy with my Performer and will accept the additional inconvenience of cooking with charcoal. If I had to get another grill, it would be another Performer.
Forget about the gas grill. This beauty with the gas igniter is just as fast in my opinion. Pile up the charcoal with grates that are included, press a button to start the blast flame, and go prep your meal. In hardly no time at all the charcoal is ready to cook over. I tried spare ribs using the indirect heat method the first time I used it and could not believe the ease. Leave the lid on and let the Weber do its job! Try that with a gas grill!
Close the vents to extingish the charcoal then relite it the next time you grill.
I must admit it was sticker shock at first when we came upon the Performer. Other charcoal grills were much cheaper, especially at the 'club' stores, but taking Weber's reputation into consideration along with the grills' warranty we decided to purchase the Performer. Assembly was hassle-free. I was intimidated by the cooking instructions at first but once you start following along it all makes sense. We purchased the hardwood charcoal based on another raters recommendation and love it. The food cooked on the Weber Performer is fabulous!
I cannot get over the difference in taste along with how moist the meat is if you follow the directions; don't pierce the meat, don't cook without the lid and let the food rest for a few minutes after removing from grill. That's all it takes to have a great meal. Clean up is simple, too. I don't know why I'd ever want to use a regular old gas grill again.
Weber did itself an injustice by naming this the Performer....This grill is a Stellar performer!!!!! The taste of charcoal with the ease of gas ignition is nothing short of Fabulous. Within 10 min. of deciding what to cook, a process that takes 10x the time, the grill is ready to cook on. The wonderful Weber design evenly cooks food to perfection. It's the best of both worlds.
Within an hour of receiving the grill, we were cooking on it. The longest part of setup was peeling the protective film from the stainless steel work surface/charcoal bin cover. Weber has hit a grand slam with this combo.
