I bought a Weber grill in 2004, about the time the big box stores started selling the really impressive looking stainless steel closed cabinet grills from China. My fateher and brother bought the made in China grills because they seemd to offer a lot more for the money. I bought the Weber because the reviews I read here were so good. They have both had problems with theirs (burners not staying lit, rusting, not lighting, etc.)
We use our grill nearly every day in the summer, and at least a few times a week through the winter. I just had my first problem (igniter failed). I called the Weber customer support number (on a Saturday afternoon). I got through very quickly to a very nice woman. She was genuinely knowledgable about the grills, had a very helpful attitude, spoke English I could understand, and seemed to be able to answer my questions without reading from a script. When I told her what was wrong, she said "I'm glad you called now, your warraanty is almost up (the warranty is 3 years on the igniter, which is a $10.00 part).
It's hard to explain how easy and pleasant this was compared to the normal experience of speaking to someone in India I can't understand and who has never even seen the item they're supporting.
I'm a customer for life.
My old Grill was well over-due for replacement, and so I started doing some research into a replacement. My previous grill was a Coleman, and had lasted a good 10 years, although the cooking quality had definately deteriorated.
I was going to purchase another "cheapy" grill, but in my research, I noticed something - almost every Weber owner rated their grill 5-star, whereas the cheapies usually mustered three stars at best.
A little more research quickly pointed out why - Webers may not last any longer than the cheaper competitors, but a 10-year old Weber still cooks better than the cheap ones do when brand new.
I invested in the "Platinum C". but have yet to use the side-burner, so I'm not sure how valuable that is. I was delighted with the quality of the Grill - it was easy to assemble, and the cooking quality is - fantastic. I purchased a Weber Griddle, and I also have a Pizza stone, and with these two additions, I cooked 8 meals in a row on my Weber, including Bacon and Eggs, home-made bread, pizza, and of course, grilled steak.
I received my grill on time via EGL. I am highly satisfied and will purchase again from Amazon!
Thanks
My 15 year old son put the grill together while I was as work. The grill has a very even heat distribution and very good heating controls. I have cooked steak at high temperatures and chicken at low temperatures. All items have come out great so far.
The stainless steel cooking surfaces and internal parts appear like they will last along time. My last Weber grill lasted for about 12 years. I expect that this one will do as well or better.
My only disappointment was that this grill did not come configured for quick-connects like the last grill did. It uses the standard screw type connection for the gas bottle.
I heard that this grill was "only" 36000 btu, and was not as hot as some other grills. Believe me, this puppy is plenty hot if all you are going to do is cook food! Disregard this btu rating. This btu rating is rubbish. This grill will transfer so much heat to your food so fast that if you're not used to cooking with a high-quality grill you will turn your beautiful porterhouses into charchol (I used a custom-cut 3-inch porter house to break in my new grill, and to my surprise, it was closer to well done than I prefer, but still DELICIOUS!) Everything is high-quality. It is much more solid than all the other grills I looked at, and the grill is very even in terms of heating. Besides, it is beautiful. The side burner was not something I was really interested in, but I just went for it. I used it the first time. THIS is the grill you need.
I owned a weber for almost 20 years before weather began to takes its toll. This one is works just like the last one and I hope to get a least that much wear as it is stainless and my last one was not.
I ordered it on 12/23 and received it on 12/28 (today) w/ the one cent shipping option. Every place it was soldered and press welded was rusty and a couple of the leg pieces appeared as if they had been heat discolored. For a $700 grill, I expected quality stainless steel w/o flaws, particularly w/o rust. On a positive note, the pieces fit together fairly well and it was easy to assemble. For the body quality, it should have been half this price. I plan to contact Weber tomorrow and voice the same complaints. Unfortunately I had not viewed this exact model prior to purchase; instead relying on the 6770001 reviews and another more expensive model I had seen at a local store.
